A Solution to a Question of A. Koldobsky

چکیده

In [Kol00], A. Koldobsky asked whether two types of generalizations of the notion of an intersection-body, are in fact equivalent. The structures of these two types of generalized intersection-bodies have been studied in [Mil06b], providing substantial positive evidence for a positive answer to this question. The purpose of this note is to construct a counter-example, which provides a surprising negative answer to this question in a strong sense. This negative answer implies the existence of a non-trivial non-negative function in the range of the spherical Radon transform.

Sections of Star Bodies and the Fourier Transform

A new approach to the study of sections of star bodies, based on methods of Fourier analysis, has recently been developed. The idea is to express certain geometric properties of bodies in terms of the Fourier transform and then apply methods of harmonic analysis to solve geometric problems. This approach has already led to several results including an analytic solution to the Busemann-Petty pro...

SECOND DERIVATIVE TEST FOR ISOMETRIC EMBEDDINGS IN Lp

An old problem of P. Levy is to characterize those Banach spaces which embed isometrically in Lp. We show a new criterion in terms of the second derivative of the norm. As a consequence we show that, if M is a twice differentiable Orlicz function with M (0) = M (0) = 0, then the n-dimensional Orlicz space l M , n ≥ 3 does not embed isometrically in Lp with 0 < p ≤ 2. These results generalize an...

A Pragmatic Solution to the Value Problem of Knowledge

We value possessing knowledge more than true belief. Both someone with knowledge and someone with a true belief possess the correct answer to a question. Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief if both contain the correct answer? I examine the philosophy of American pragmatist John Dewey and then I offer a novel solution to this question often called the value problem of knowledge. I pr...

Inputs and Outputs Estimation in Inverse DEA

The present study addresses the following question: if among a group of decision making units, the decision maker is required to increase inputs and outputs to a particular unit in which the DMU, with respect to other DMUs, maintains or improves its current efficiencylevel, how much should the inputs and outputs of the DMU increase? This question is considered as a problem of inverse data envel...

Positive definite distributions and normed spaces

We answer a question of Alex Koldobsky. We show that for each −∞< p < 2 and each n 3−p there is a normed space X of dimension n which embeds in Ls if and only if −n < s p. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. MSC: 52A21
